A Walk in the Forest Cushion
This cushion was an offshoot study from my Children’s Tales collection. I was going on lots of woodland walks while I was creating the above collection and I felt like red riding hood wandering between the firs as the seasons changed from autumn to winter. On bright sunny early autumn days the dark, dense fir tree woods had a lightness about it that I tried to capture in this design with my trees becoming lighter and denser the closer they got to the sun.
A mixture of fine cotton and wool was used to give a subtle texture to the trees and lifting them from their creamy-white wool background.
This one-of-a-kind design was lovingly handwoven in my East Lothian studio. The structure of the trees was created using a double cloth weave structure and the back was woven in cotton using an adapted basket weave structure. Some yellow piping trim was added when sewing the cushion to really let the design sing.
